June 2008 Update

Greetings from Quent Cordair Fine Art, newly relocated to the California wine country! Well, almost. We're still remodeling the grand new space in downtown Napa, with the expectation and goal of having the doors open for the July 4th weekend. When we've waxed impatient with the length of time that the remodeling work has taken, our construction people have noted that 3,600 square feet is larger than many single family homes. Nonetheless, as of today the drywall is all up, the front half of the space is textured and painted, and the crown-molding is being affixed thereto, dressing the walls as a good frame dresses a painting. See Linda Cordair’s new “Director’s Corner” blog (http://cordair.blogspot.com/ ) for pics of the fresh new color scheme on the exterior. Also on her blog are details of an excellent Napa lodging deal offered just to QCFA clients and fans, courtesy of our innkeeper friends, for a stay at their lovely bed-and-breakfast inn located just up the street from the new gallery.

We haven’t chosen a grand opening date yet, as summer is high season for wine-country tourism and, even after opening the doors, it will take us at least a few weeks to finish the detailing, to train new employees and to get the gallery up and humming to our satisfaction. But we’ll work on setting a date for an official celebration as soon as feasible, even if the gala has to wait till later in the summer. We’ll keep everyone posted.

For those who have offered assistance with helping with the remodel and the gallery move, please know that we’re so very appreciative of your thoughtfulness and volunteered efforts. At the moment, we have enough hands on deck, and the best thing that our clients can do to help us is -- to keep buying the art! Feed the artists! (Don’t make us break out the infomercial featuring Sally Struthers again). We need to keep our artists’ bills paid -- and our own, too, of course -- while we add daily to Home Depot’s bottom line. Did you know that nearly all of the ingredients for creating a fine art gallery are to be found in a Home Depot? Oh yes. The inventory of the Home Depot in Napa is now short one whole art-gallery worth of materials.

GALLERY NEWS

BRYAN LARSEN ATTENDING JACOB COLLINS WORKSHOP

A note from QCFA artist Bryan Larsen, who continues his quest, as every professional should, towards the improvement and perfection of his craft: "I have come to a point in my career as an Artist where I feel that my technical skill is not worthy of the themes and subjects I want to paint. I have long been an admirer of the technical painting skill of Jacob Collins, and many of his students who have come up through his Water Street Atelier in Manhattan. When I discovered the summer intensive courses he and his students were offering at the Grand Central Academy, also in Manhattan, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn classical drawing and painting techniques from one of the best new schools of classical realism.

“I will be spending four weeks in the ‘Summer Intensive’ drawing course studying techniques for accurately capturing gesture, form and proportion from the live model, as well as techniques for rendering form and value in high detail. Over the following two weeks I will be taking a crash course in figure painting in the classical style. I am not going to NY expecting to learn anything new about theme, subject selection, composition or philosophy of art, but I do expect to return to my studio with some new tools to more effectively achieve my own artistic goals. My instructors at the GCA include Jacob Collins, Camie Davis, Sam Wisneski, Nicholas Hiltner, Travis Schlaht, Edward Minoff and Douglas Flynt. Additional inspiration will be provided by the great city of New York.”

QCFA ACQUIRES CAPULETTI PAINTING AT PARIS AUCTION FOR CLIENT

Last week in the pre-dawn hours, California time, QCFA Gallery Director Linda Cordair was on a conference call to an auction house in Paris, successfully bidding for an original Capuletti painting on behalf of one of our good clients. In the days prior to the auction, given our long experience with Capuletti’s work, we were able to work remotely with the auction house towards confirming the authenticity of the painting, a work not previously shown in the Capuletti literature. If you are looking to acquire a particular artwork or would be interested in the work of a particular artist, please let us know. The client writes: “This wasn’t the most opportune time, I know, to ask for your help on the Capuletti <considering our present gallery move>. Thank you for finding the time, somehow, and for your excellent auction sense. Within less than a year, I’ve picked up two fine paintings through your good offices. I hope we can continue doing business this way.”

NOW IN THE QCFA ARTIST’S STUDIO

Step 6 of Bryan Larsen’s commissioned work, Breaking Through: “The next step was to paint the cliffs. While I wanted some photographic reference to base the cliffs and rocks on, the overall form of the landscape was determined by my original compositional drawings. The diagonals and value ranges were important to the structure of the composition. So, working from several different sets of photos of cliffs from the east coast of the US, from Great Britain, and from some details of smaller cliffs in Little Cottonwood Canyon neat Salt Lake City, this is what I came up with….”

SANDRA SHAW TO GIVE LECTURE AT OCON

QCFA Sculptor Sandra Shaw will be speaking on “Objectivism & the Future of Art” at OCON, to be held June 28 through July 6 in Newport Beach, CA. Sandra will also be displaying a retrospective collection of her work at the conference, including sold out pieces and a commissioned piece, "Arrival."

THREE QCFA SCULPTORS SELECTED FOR NATIONAL SCULPTURE SOCIETY EXHIBITION

Congratulations to QCFA Sculptors Sandra Shaw, Jay Hall Carpenter and Martin Eichinger for having works accepted for exhibition at the National Sculpture Society’s Member Invitational in July. Included in the exhibition are Sandra Shaw’s Girl With a Gazing Ball, Jay Hal Carpenter’s Fredrick Douglas, and Martin Eichinger’s Cross My Heart.

Enjoy the art,

Quent Cordair
