This painting was made pre-911; just barely—made in May of that year. My idea was that to be absorbed in a peaceful world, there must be a military presence to preserve it. Hence, the battleship. Having fought in a war, I know first-hand the importance of the military in America's survival. Notice the colors of the dress of the young girl on the left. A symbol, yes. A symbol of America's colors. Red, white and blue. The dress of the girl on the right is symbolic of simple normalcy. The two girls live in a sunny world. A world where nothing is to be feared. One girl teases her cat with something unseen, but present. What is it? It's the chance for her to have a cat as a pet, a luxury one can't afford in a world without a military to defend it. It might be a ball of string, or anything. That's a mystery among others. Is it the girls' father who is going away? Well, yes. What else would it mean? A battleship is manned. To include it in the painting has to have a meaning. Imagine the painting without it? And in their world, he will fare well, just as his daughters do, thanks to his profession as a military man. The girls are not the least bit concerned. They take it for granted that their world will be just fine.
