This painting was inspired by a view from the Coal Mine Ridge in Portola Valley. We are looking into land completely controlled by the San Andreas Fault Zone. The redwood and douglas fir forest seem to sweep down the ravines with the fog. The grassy hilltops fading in and out, as the fog lifts and falls.
To enhance the drama of this scene, I added mica, a finely ground reflective rock, to my pallet. It is stable in mixture and, like all the paints I use, has great archival stability.
I have had the pleasure of riding and hiking throughout the Portola Valley area, but I love Windy Hill. This open space was purchased by donations from private individuals through the Peninsula Open Space Trust. Efforts to buy open space, without the use of eminent domain or forced assessments, is a worthy goal. Lately old ranchers have donated their lands, because they want to keep them open space. Much of these lands are on unstable terrain, and would cost taxpayers huge amounts for road maintenance, and fire protection. Sometimes the most cost effective way to utilize land is to utilize it for recreation, cattle grazing and water storage.
