Sunset at Crystal Springs can be both thrilling with fog tumbling over redwood studded ridges, and serene in luxurious blending colors, where water reflects sunset sky. This year we've had a very wet winter, causing beautiful sunsets at storms end. The increased moisture created wonderful fog tongues.

I have lived near Crystal Springs most of my life, and delighted in the scenes it offers. It has taken me many years to understand the fluid dynamics creating downward pulls and plays on ridge fog. I am still learning. In this painting I have combined different elements of Crystal Springs, as I know it. I have tried to convey the serene, yet dramatic effect I have seen on so many outings. I am pleased with the result and hope you enjoy this work.

Crystal Springs reservoir was built in the early 20th century in a valley that originally held a series of sag ponds created by San Andreas Fault. It provides water for San Francisco and the Peninsula. Crystal Springs is located west of Hillsburough and the 280 freeway, called the most scenic freeway in the country. The earth uplift caused by the fault, creates the dramatic ridges you see here, most of which are made up of weak sandstones and serpentine rocks.
