Horse packing over the east Sierra crest, and experiencing vast expanses, is the motive power behind this work. I have considered, not only geologic time, but atmospherics, and different plant species growth patterns. The stream portrayed is Fish Creek. The meadow is soft luxury and the rocks often smooth as satin from glacial polish. This painting is not a duplicate of the scene. I have taken memories from other parts of the trip to emphasize the Romantic Realism of this vista. It is my hope that this painting conveys the compelling beauty that has drawn us on our high Sierra pack trips for over 30 years. It is my treasure.
Love of freedom, independence, ability to work hard and think quickly are essential for horse packing. Leading our Paso Fino horses up and over 11,900' McGee Pass, south of Mammoth Mountain took 2 1/2 days and a climb of 4000'. The horses carried enough provisions for 12 days. We simplify everything, in order to extend our flexibility for adventure. It took me two weeks to make jerky and hardtack for the journey. We also repair gear, get the truck and trailer in passable shape, and make sure we don't forget important items. 12 days can be a long time when provisions are inadequate. We move camp almost every day, except when we can day ride. Riding the rocky trails with unknown sweeping views, just around a rock prow, is the greatest experience for us. Enjoyable too, is the peaceful mornings and evenings grazing the horses and watching light change on high peaks.
I urge anyone who is interested to go with commercial Pack Stations east of the Sierra Crest. The Packers are the bravest most resourceful people I've ever met. Information is on the web, but we know that McGee, Cottonwood, Levit Meadows, Kennedy Meadows and Rock Creek Pack Stations are reliable and great.
