The California Buckeyes or Horse Chestnuts are unusual small trees. They put out leaves quite early, and then in May and June puts on a glorious show of orchid like flower spikes, which I have depicted in this work. Then, in late summer or early fall, they lose all leaves, remaining twisted whitish ghost trees on hillsides and forest edge. This work celebrates spring by Crystal Springs. A stiff breeze is up, the Buckeye, Monkey flower, California Tall Larkspur, and Yellow Maraposa Lilies are in full flower. To enhance the drama of this scene, I added mica, a finely ground reflective rock, to my pallet. It is stable in mixture and, like all the paints I use, has great archival stability. I hope you enjoy the tumbling fog, flowers and moving water in this painting.
