"I intended October Eve to present both the natural and manmade aspects of the world. In the intense, burning sky and mirroring water, the raw dynamic and static power of nature is underscored. From this rise the towers and lights of the city—tall and aspiring, yet firm and stable forms immune to nature's power, and harmonious with it as well.
"The figure presents a casual, graceful and beautiful vision of mankind, perfectly comfortable in her surroundings. Between her fingers is the very symbol of man's conquest of his environment: the contained and controlled force of fire directed to a specific, useful function—one of pure human pleasure.
"The figure is surrounded by the fundamental elements of construction: the steel of the beam, the stone of the bricks and mortar, the ceramic of the tiles, and the glass of the window in the rear. The triumphal use of these elements is reflected in the skyscrapers behind."
