About Jay Hall Carpenter ~

Jay Hall Carpenter

A professional sculptor for 24 years, Jay Hall Carpenter is perhaps best known as the creator of the original models for 500 sculptures that adorn the Washington National Cathedral. These include saints, angels and gargoyles. Many American churches contain his work, as do the State Department, the Smithsonian, and Canterbury Cathedral. Carpenter was elected into the National Sculpture Society before the age of thirty and has won numerous national awards for his sculptures.

Recent projects include an eight foot bronze of State Comptroller Louis Goldstein for the State Capitol in Maryland, and a over life-size bronze and granite sculpture of Jim Henson and Kermit the frog for the University of Maryland. Saint Anne's Catholic Community in Barrington, IL has commissioned Carpenter to Create its twelve statue "Community of Saints and Holy people", which will adorn the new worship space. The first of these sculptures will be dedicated at the consecration of the new building in April of 2000.

Carpenter's education includes study at the Pratt Institute, The Catholic University of America, and he has served as sculptor's assistant to Frederick Hart, working on Hart's major works for the Washington National Cathedral, and the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Washington, DC. Carpenter has also served as Sculptor-in-Residence at the Cathedral, Wesley Seminary and Catholic University.

Carpenter has continually balanced the execution of public sculpture commissions with the creation of fine-art bronzes and figure drawings. The bronzes reflect Carpenter's appreciation and mastery of the human form. His very limited editions often draw from mythology and legend as a framework for exploring contemporary themes. Cast using the lost-wax process, each bronze is finished by the artist to ensure the highest quality.
